Located in the alluvial plain of the rivers Sor and Agout, a few kilometers west from the city of Castres, the Regional Bird Reserve of Cambounet sur le Sor is made up of several ponds resulting from former gravel quarries. These ponds have subsequently been colonized by aquatic vegetation and wildlife. The highlight of this place resides in the presence of an important colony of herons. The reserve is labelled as a ZNIEFF area (Natural Area of Ecological, Flora and Fauna Interest), category 1.
This nature reserve was founded on the 19th September 1990 and belongs to the RNF (Nature Reserves of France) since 1993.
