The church of Notre-Dame de la Gardelle was built in the 14th or 15th century in a southern Gothic style. Housed in a cemetery in Villeneuve-sur-Vère, its main attraction is its mural frescoes by Nicolaï Greschny.
Inside, in 1947, the parish priest asked the fresquist Nicolaï Greschny to decorate the chapel entirely.
The different painted scenes present stages in Mary’s life (Annunciation, Visitation, at the foot of the cross…). Others concern the passage from this life to eternal life: death of Joseph, Dormition of Mary, fresco of the Last Judgment, parable of the Rich and the poor Lazarus… All drawn in a neo-Byzantine style quite original.
Nicolaï Greschny is one of the greatest contemporary frescoes, a master of Byzantine art.
His work provokes you, fascinates you, invites you to travel and meditation. The beauty of the icons and the powerful colors force contemplation. Several churches of the Tarn carry his work.
