The garden city of Fontgrande was built near the main shafts of the Carmaux mine to provide more suitable housing for mine employees and large families.
At the end of the 19th century, industrialists built worker cities as close as possible to production centres, thus answering the main question of housing a large population near factories or mines. The concept of the garden city; theorized by the English E. Howard in 1898, proposes a universe opposite to the polluted industrial city. The city has private and public green spaces located in a central position.
